Hair Barrette Assemblage, Mirror, Wood
0.75 in x 20 in x 2 ft
Welcome Home is a circular assemblage composed of individual hair barrettes encircling a central mirror. The work examines the barrette as an object often dismissed as trivial, elevating it through accumulation and scale. Removed from its functional relationship to the body, the barrette shifts from accessory to structure, forming a frame that both surrounds and directs reflection.
The circular form suggests return and continuity, while the mirror reintroduces the viewer into the work. References to girlhood, childlike curiosity, and early beauty rituals emerge through the material itself. The barrette carries the residue of repetitive acts—fastening, adjusting, maintaining—that extend beyond childhood and continue to inform how identity is constructed and perceived over time.
