Plastic Daisy Hair Clips
7 ft x 8.5 ft

Daisy Chain is a visual and performative exploration of how material objects like hair clips carry personal and cultural significance. This work consists of about 2,300 chain-linked daisy clips in various shades hanging in the form of a maypole. These clips, once a marker of my girlhood, now serve as a conduit to reconnect with my past and guide the complexities of Black womanhood.
In the performance, I navigate counterclockwise through the installation—running, crawling, falling, and getting up—mirroring the struggles and layered hoops of the black experience. The daisy hair clips, reminiscent of those I wore as a child, symbolize the constraints of girlhood and the expectation to "stay in place." This piece reclaims that narrative, transforming a childhood accessory into a powerful medium for exploring identity, resilience, and the journey towards self-discovery.
