Crown of Thorns is a sculpture crafted from melted plastic combs, reimagining the symbolic crown from the Passion of Christ. The work draws parallels between the suffering associated with Christ's crown and the precarious nature of texturism within Black hair culture.
By questioning the notions of "good hair" versus "bad hair," the piece critiques the societal pressures and pain tied to these arbitrary standards. The distortion of the combs reflects the ongoing theme in my work, where materials are manipulated to challenge and reveal the complexities of Black identity and beauty.
